Brain Injury Conditions

TBI, short for traumatic brain injury, is caused by an impact, blow or jolt to the skull or a penetrating injury that disrupts the normal function of the brain. Injuries to the head that can cause traumatic brain injury range from “mild” cases, where there is a brief change in mental status or consciousness, to “severe” cases, where there is an extended period on unconsciousness, often leaving the individual in a coma, after the injury.

Most cases of traumatic brain injury are “mild” and relate to injuries resulting in mild concussions. Based upon the location and severity of the injury, motor and sensory functions can be partially or fully lost. Victims usually recover from “mild” traumatic brain injuries but there can be some long term damage if the case is more severe.

Causes of Brain Injuries

A traumatic brain injury is usually the result of severe trauma, a sudden force, impact, blow or jolt to the head that jars or injuries the brain within the skull. This damage can result in bruising of the brain, and in more severe cases, penetration into the brain which can cause severe bleeding and swelling of the brain.  Based upon the severity of injury, motor and sensory function can be partially or fully lost, concussions or comas can occur and the final damage can be life-long and even result in death.

The majority of traumatic brain injuries are caused by either a severe fall or an auto accident. These causes represent nearly 53 percent of all TBI cases. Collisions cause the body to endure extreme forces that can result in severe blows or jolts to the brain that can lead to internal bleeding of the skull. The bleeding creates pressure on the brain and can lead to serious injury. Other common causes of traumatic brain injury (TBI) are sudden impacts or "struck by" events and violence.
